Professor Lord Robert Winston is a famous scientist and a world expert in the study of human fertility and child development. He has been awarded a knighthood for his work.
He is Professor of Science and Society and Emeritus Professor of Fertility Studies at Imperial College London. He is also scientific patron of Gravida and the Liggins Institute.
What does Professor Winston do?
Lord Winston is very skilled at helping people understand new scientific discoveries in the area of human reproduction and human development. He has made several TV series which help us understand how we develop in the womb and then how the environment we grow up in interacts with our genetic makeup and how this affects our health throughout our lives.
The programmes he has made include: Child of our Time and The Human Body and they have been watched by people all over the world.
To encourage school students in the UK develop an interest in science he set up the Wohl Reach Out Lab at Imperial College in London. Professor Winston set up the Reach Out Lab after visiting the LENScience classrooms at Auckland University’s Liggins Institute in 2007 and 2008.
What does Professor Winston like doing in his spare time?
- He is a football fan and supports Arsenal Football Club.
- He enjoys learning new skills and he learned to play the saxophone a few years ago.
- He is a member of the House of Lords in England and speaks about education, science, medicine and the arts.
